July is a great month for an early morning topwater bite. I became tired of big trout popping my topwater at daylight and missing the hook. Then I remembered what an old-timer showed me a few years ago. He called it a "double duty". I attached a 24 inch section of 20 pound mono to the rear hook of a Zara Spook Jr. Then I tie on a circle hook and pin on a Bass Assassin Jerkbait through the nose like a minnow. The hook-ups increased immediately! Get on the Water ---Bend a Rod !!!
The Lure (Attraction – pardon the pun) of Flash, Scent, and Color
Often the waters in the summer will not be as clear as we are used to the rest of the year. When the water starts to murk-up, think of things that create attention to increase your catches. These include flash, scent, and color. For flash, go to lures that are shiny, like spoons and spinnerbaits. If you are fishing offshore use skirts that have bright Mylar strips. For scent, either add scent to your lures, or consider fishing baits that put natural scent in the water. Finally, use colors that can be easily seen, like chartreuse or white.
